Barn Conversions Midlands

Many barns are derelict when they are purchased or have been always used for storing cattle or hay and straw.  If you want to do a barn conversion you will need to have a good team behind you including surveyors, Architects, builders who have experience in barn conversions as well as liaising with the planning authorities.  Getting planning permission nowadays for barn conversions is harder than it was in the seventies and eighties due to too many unsympathetic conversions to barns.  The planning authorities prefer barns to be converted into craft shops and workshops, light industry or for the community to use.

Things to consider when deciding to convert a barn include:

• Barns are more expensive to convert than building a new house from scratch.
• There is little natural light in barns.
• Original features and beams need to be kept.
• You will need to present the local authorities with pictures and plans on how you want to convert the barn.
• If the barn is a listed building more issues will arise.
• You will need to comply with infrastructural issues and building regulations including water, gas, electricity and sewage as most barns aren’t connected to these.
• You will need a reserve of money for any problems that arise.
• Gutters and Downpipes need to be discreet.
• Chimneys’ aren’t usually allowed on barns.
• Windows need to be restored or specific types of windows allowed.
• New doors and window opening aren’t usually allowed.
• Satellite dishes, TV aerials aren’t allowed to be installed.
• Stone cleaning is usually not allowed.
• Finally the height of the barn should be retained as much as possible.
